Valle delle Ferriere and Sfusato Amalfitano

Continuing along the Valle dei Mulini, the landscape gradually changes, inviting us to immerse ourselves in the uncontaminated nature of the Valle delle Ferriere. So called because of the presence of ancient ironworks, this valley is one of the forty-one biogenetic reserves of Italy. It is a deep, primitive, and luxuriant valley that begins between the mountains of Scala and ends, six kilometers downstream, in the territory of Amalfi. The ancient ironworks, built at the beginning of the 14th century, processed raw iron from the island of Elba, taking advantage of the efficient port of Amalfi and escaping the state monopoly on iron. But as the centuries passed, the voice of the smiths was silenced and the ironworks became silent, allowing nature to take over again. In the heart of the nature reserve you can admire the majestic wall of fossilized moss, a huge sponge of water that, dripping down the hanging moss roots, has created a spectacular structure of living stalactites and stalagmites. The rare and precious subtropical microclimate has allowed very ancient plant species to survive. This enchanting place, made famous by Grand Tour travelers in the 19th century, continues to enchant with its romantic beauty, a treasure that reveals the authentic and fascinating soul of the Amalfi Coast.

Famous for its intense aroma, juicy flesh, and precious essential oils, the Amalfi lemon is a symbol of the enchantment of the Amalfi Coast. The terraces that shape the mountain are among the most famous images of the coast. For centuries, between the blue of the sea and the green of the hills, lemon groves have enriched the landscape, creating a unique scenario that tells a story of ancient tradition and love for the land. Walking among the evocative terraces, we are enveloped by the fragrance of the “sfusato amalfitano”, the true king of these places. With its golden rind, intense fragrance, and essential oils, this tapered lemon grows luxuriantly in the shade of the Mediterranean sun. Each tree, tended with dedication by local growers, tells a story of tradition and skill, a centuries-old art of cultivation deeply rooted in the heart of Amalfi.

From the bountiful fruits of these lemon groves come some of the most beloved products of the Amalfi Coast. The famous limoncello, perhaps the most famous of all, is a sweet and aromatic liqueur made by macerating lemon peel in pure alcohol, capturing the essence of Amalfi's lemons in every sip. Alongside this iconic drink, we find the Lemon Delight, a small pastry masterpiece that enchants with a soft, light cake filled with lemon cream that explodes with flavor in every bite, offering a perfect harmony of softness and citrus intensity. The lemon groves of Amalfi are not just part of the landscape, they are the soul of the Amalfi Coast, a place where tradition and love of the land come together. In these gardens are born flavors and aromas that enchant the senses and delight the heart of anyone lucky enough to discover them.
