Basilica of Saint Trofimena
We are in the spiritual heart of Minori: the Basilica of Santa Trofimena, dedicated to the patron saint of the town. The Basilica is not far from the beach where the remains of the Saint were found, encased in a marble urn. Around the year 1000, when Minori became a bishopric, the relics were moved to the new cathedral in the center of the city. In the 17th century, due to the catastrophic state of the cathedral, the people of Minori decided to demolish it and rebuild it, resulting in the present basilica, in the shape of a Latin cross with three naves.
The main façade, facing the sea, has several registers: in the lower part there are four niches containing the statues of the Evangelists, while the doors are surmounted by three medallions, the central one representing the Saint. The neoclassical bell tower has a quadrangular plan and a clock at the top.
Inside the basilica, the light, decorative stucco and marble create an atmosphere of refined elegance. The nave has a barrel vault roof with side lunettes and decorative stucco. The marble high altar contains the Crucifixion altarpiece by Marco del Pino from Siena. The crypt, dedicated to Saint Trofimena, is a remarkable example of Baroque style. Her relics are kept under the high altar in a marble urn with a bas-relief of the sleeping martyr.
