Borgo Scacciaventi

Proceeding towards the beating heart of Cava, we cross the threshold of Borgo Scacciaventi. This ancient medieval neighborhood welcomes the visitor with the scents of local cafes and pastry shops. The "Borgo" is documented in 1180 and takes its name from the family that settled there. Born as a settlement of workshops along the ancient Via Caba, it developed between the 14th and 15th centuries thanks to trade, becoming the economic center of the Metelliana Valley. Over time, it also became a residential area, with the typical "Case Bottega" with arcades, which became distinctive architectural elements. In the 15th century, the Borgo became a political and religious center, with noble palaces built from the union of pre-existing workshops. Between the 16th and 17th centuries, Baroque architecture influenced the facades, while the earthquakes of the late 17th and 18th centuries led to reconstructions that preserved the arcades, with rare exceptions such as Palazzo Genoino. In the 18th and 19th centuries, many "palazziate" were raised with new floors. Characteristic architectural elements are the "pilieri" in various materials (tuff, travertine, piperno), round or sunk arches and simple portals with bas-relief decorations. Despite the transformations, the original structure is still recognizable.

Among the many shops in the Borgo, it is impossible not to succumb to the temptation of a culinary stop. In addition to a good coffee, the "confettoni" are a real treat for the palate: roasted cocoa beans covered in dark chocolate and decorated with diavulilli, small white sugared almonds. An ancient tradition that accompanies moments of conviviality.
