The Castle of Sant'Adiutore

Leaving the village of Scacciaventi behind, we head towards the castle of Sant'Adiutore, which watches over the town from the top of its ancient walls. A medieval bastion of the 9th century, it was built as a defensive fortification. Its strategic position allowed the control of the communication routes and the defense of the territory. Its origin is uncertain: some place it around 787, others between the 9th and 10th centuries. In the 11th century it was given by Duke Ruggiero to Robert, son of the Norman Angerio, and in 1110 it was purchased by the Monastery of the Holy Trinity. Inhabited by a monk and a layman who commanded the garrisons, the castle was destroyed in 1291 by Robert, Count of Arras, vicar of Charles II of Anjou, and rebuilt in 1390 with funds raised by a tax imposed on the citizens. Used as a military post until the 17th century, it then began a slow decline, aggravated by the bombing in 1943 during the Second World War. It was finally restored by the Municipality of Cava de' Tirreni in 1970 and recently in 2023.

Every year, this historic place revives the community's devotion during the Castle Festival, one of the most heartfelt religious and folklore traditions in the area. In honor of the Blessed Sacrament that freed Cava from the plague in 1656, the town gathers to pay homage and commemorate the miracle.
