St Pancras Church

The Church of San Pancrazio, first mentioned in an official document by the Archbishop of Amalfi in 1370, is an authentic jewel of spirituality surrounded by lush greenery. Its enchanting position offers an extraordinary view of Positano and the Faraglioni of Capri, creating an atmosphere of rare beauty. It is said that the splendid olive grove that surrounds it inspired the poet Alfonso Gatto, while the painter Clemente Tafuri, fascinated by the serenity of the place, eternalized it in his canvases. Dedicated to St. Pancrazio, a young martyr of the persecutions of Diocletian in 303 A.D., the church opens onto a large courtyard with rows of palm trees that gracefully welcome visitors. The bell tower, rebuilt in the style of the 14th century, rises to the sky like a symbol of faith. On the façade, three entrance doors, decorated with mosaics from the Ravenna School in 1957, depicting St. Pancras, St. Anthony of Padua and, in the center, the Madonna of Carmine, envelop the place in an atmosphere of solemn sanctity, where art and faith meet to celebrate the divine.

Inside, the Church of San Pancrazio has a structure with three naves and as many apses, giving the space an aura of imposing sanctity. The high altar, the work of the Neapolitan master Baldassare di Lucca, houses a precious 16th-century polyptych. In the center of this masterpiece, the Madonna with Child is flanked by the figures of St. Pancras and St. Leonard, while in the upper predella, eight Apostles surround the solemn figure of Christ the Redeemer. The side aisles, with elegant cross vaults, each contain three small chapels: on the right, those dedicated to St. Gaetano, Our Lady of the Snows, and St. Anne; on the left, those dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Christ Crucified, and St. Raphael. The church also preserves the image of Our Lady of Carmel, venerated with deep devotion by the faithful and celebrated every year on July 16th with a solemn procession, in a rite that combines faith and tradition.
