The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and Pantaleone
Overlooking the main square of Ravello, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and Pantaleone is one of the most emblematic places of worship in the town. Its luminous façade houses the famous bronze door by Barisano da Trani, which enhances its uniqueness and magnificence.
Crossing the threshold of the Cathedral, the nave soon reveals its artistic treasures. The Epistle Ambo, embellished with magnificent mosaics, depicts the scene of Jonah being swallowed by the whirlpool, a symbol of salvation and redemption. On the opposite side, the Gospel Ambo, with its spiral columns resting on marble lions, stands out for the elegance of its sculpture and craftsmanship. Both works express the encounter between Romanesque solemnity and refined Byzantine influence.
The Cathedral has a deep connection with St. Pantaleon, a 3rd-century physician and martyr, the patron saint of Ravello. His relic, the blood preserved in an ampulla, liquefies every year, renewing a miracle that still fascinates and moves the faithful.
In the dim light of the crypt of the Cathedral of Ravello, the Museum houses precious artistic testimonies, among which the elegant statue of Sigilgaida Rufolo stands out. Made of white marble, it represents a serene face adorned with a tiara and a hairstyle fixed at the nape of the neck, details that enhance its refinement.
