Tower of Cetara
After a last look at the church of San Pietro Apostolo, we head towards one of the most iconic symbols of the town: the Torre Vicereale. Perched on the rocky cliff overlooking the sea, the tower stands out and dominates the entire panorama. Built in the 14th century, during the Angevin period, its main function was to watch over and defend the Duchy of Amalfi. Over the centuries it has been raised and modified, taking on the appearance that still characterizes it today. After the Turkish invasion of 1534, it was integrated into a defense system of about 400 towers along the coasts of southern Italy, using smoke and fire signals to alert the population. The tower was equipped with three bronze cannons and light catapults to protect the coast. It passed into private hands at the end of the 19th century, became municipal property in the 1990s and was later restored.
The Vicereale Tower now houses the Cetara Civic Museum, dedicated to fishing and the tradition of anchovy sauce. This unique condiment has become a gastronomic symbol of the town, appreciated far beyond the borders of the Amalfi Coast.
