Church of St Peter the Apostle
The church of San Pietro Apostolo, dedicated to its patron saint, is located in the oldest part of Cetara, a spiritual reference point for the community. The dome, covered with refined ambrogettes, recalls the typical style of the churches of the Amalfi Coast. The neoclassical façade has a bronze portal decorated with reliefs of St. Peter and St. Andrew, the patron saints of the fishermen of Cetara.
The interior is decorated with fine stucco and a series of side chapels. The long nave is dominated by a barrel vault decorated with delicate floral motifs. Among the works of art in the church are the 15th-century tombstone of Grandenetto D'Aulisio, the fisherman who rescued the son of Ferdinand I of Aragon, and several altars with paintings and statues, including those dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of Sorrows, and St. Peter. The presbytery houses the 18th-century high altar with marble inlays and a recently restored 16th-century Crucifixion.
In the transept, there are paintings of St. Anthony of Padua and Our Lady of the Rosary, and a niche with the bust of St. Gaetano of Thiene. On the counter façade, there is a Neapolitan organ from 1864, restored in 2002. The architectural and artistic ensemble makes the church a significant example of historical and cultural evolution.
