Church of San Salvatore de Birecto
As the pace of the day slows down, we catch sight of the Church of San Salvatore de Birecto from Piazza Umberto I. Embraced by the surrounding buildings, the church rests on a vault that hides the memory of the Dragone stream, hidden by the road built at the beginning of the 20th century. A straight flight of steps connects the square to the small churchyard, a corner of peace and spirituality. Dating back to the 10th century, the church is a living story of history and architectural transformations. The neoclassical façade leads to an atrium with a 14th-century loggia and cross vaults, where a bronze door from 1087, twin to that of Amalfi Cathedral and forged in Constantinople, stands out. San Salvatore de Birecto played a very important role in the history of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi: in this solemn place, the Doges received their investiture, sealing their bond with the city and the sea.
Inside, the church welcomes the faithful with three barrel vaulted naves divided by columns, two of which support columns with Roman capitals, witnesses of an even more ancient past. Among the works of art that decorate the interior, a polychrome wooden group with the Madonna and Child, a 15th-century masterpiece attributed to Pietro Alemanno, stands out. There is also a fine marble pluteus with two peacocks, of clear Byzantine inspiration, dating back to the 12th century, and a large bronze bell dating back to 1298, the sound of which has accompanied the life of the village for centuries.
