The Collegiate Church of St. Mary Magdalene

Among the alleys and staircases that lead to the sea, the Church of St. Mary Magdalene enchants with its elegance. Built in 1274 on the remains of an ancient medieval fortress, it was erected by the citizens in honor of the saint, in gratitude for their liberation from a Saracen garrison. Over the centuries it underwent several modifications, and in 1706 Pope Clement XI raised it to the rank of collegiate church. Its façade, a rare example of Rococo style on the Amalfi Coast, is characterized by columns and capitals with stucco decorations that enhance its harmony. At the top, the statue of the patron saint dominates the structure. The 16th-century bell tower in brown tuff, with its slender shape and octagonal bell tower, completes the profile of the church. Nearby, the majolica tiled dome catches the sunlight, shining against the blue sky, an unmistakable symbol of the Atrani landscape.

Inside, the church presents a three-nave plan, an elegant interweaving of sacred spaces. Among the chapels, two treasures stand out: on the left, the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, and on the right, the Chapel of an Atranese noble family, where the painting “The Unbelief of St. Thomas” by Andrea Sabatini enchants with its beauty. The nave is dominated by a barrel vault with lateral lunettes decorated with stucco floral motifs that recall the delicacy of nature. The marble altar, dating back to 1700, is surmounted by a flat ceiling with a canvas depicting the apparition of Christ to Mary Magdalene. There are also three wooden altar-pieces by the painter D'Amato from Maiori: in the center, St. Mary Magdalene, and on the sides, St. Andrew and St. Sebastian complete the sacred composition.

Today the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena remains a fundamental landmark of the village, which celebrates the Saint with festivities and a traditional procession of her statue every July 22nd.
