Piazzetta Umberto I

The Piazzetta of Atrani, the vital center of the village, is a place where life is quiet but lively. At any time of the year, the inhabitants gather here to chat and share their daily lives. It is the social heart of the village, where past and present intertwine. Light and shadow play among the white plasterwork and hidden gardens, creating a play of perspective that has enchanted artists of all ages. Among them, Maurits Cornelis Escher, during a stay in Atrani in the 1930s, was fascinated by this labyrinth of stairs and arches and turned it into art, capturing in his work the eternal dance between reality and illusion.

At the foot of the Collegiata di Santa Maria Maddalena, five ceramic amphorae adorn the staircase. They are the work of Lucio Liguori, and their shapes and colors speak of a dialogue between memory and modernity. A continuous evolution in which tradition is renewed without ever losing its identity.
