Church of St James the Apostle

Climbing up ancient steps, among terraces and panoramic views, we reach the Church of St. James the Apostle, in the locality of Santo Jato. The church was probably built at the end of the 13th century on the remains of an ancient rock chapel. The façade, in the essential tones of gray and white, is embellished by a central portal and a majolica tile that embellishes the entrance. The bell tower has three levels and is crowned by a glazed ceramic spire that recalls the coastal tradition.

Inside, the church has a basilica floor plan without a transept. The three naves, separated by elegant arches, are supported by marble columns that give lightness and harmony to the whole space. The real treasure of the church is a cycle of frescoes discovered by chance under the right aisle. Dating back to the late Byzantine period, the murals depict holy figures whose presence testifies to an artistic tradition rich in symbolism and spirituality. The style, very similar to that of the upper chapel of Santa Maria dell'Olearia, is characterized by a perspective that makes the figures seem almost alive. The discovery of these works suggests that the original site of the church was a rock chapel, identified in the premises below.
