The Cathedral of San Lorenzo
Located in the historic center, the Cathedral of Scala dominates the square with its majestic presence. Dedicated to San Lorenzo, its origins date back to the 11th century. The façade has three portals, the central one in Romanesque-Gothic style with jambs decorated with two guardian griffins and tendrils. The massive bell tower has three levels with a square plan.
The interior of the church has three naves. The white walls reflect the elegance typical of the Italian Rococo style. The vault of the nave has a coffered wooden ceiling decorated with beautiful paintings depicting the works of St. Lawrence and his martyrdom. Of particular beauty is the tiled floor, with the representation of a fence, symbol of the martyrdom of the saint. In the center of the nave there is an image of a lion and a ladder, symbols of the city. The high altar is made from a sarcophagus from the crypt of Purgatory, on which is carved the image of the Good Shepherd.
The cathedral is built on three levels and hides two crypts: the Crypt of Paradise and the Crypt of Purgatory. The Crypt of Paradise, in Gothic style, holds on its central altar a Christ carved in wood dating back to the second half of the 13th century, while next to it is revealed the ancient tomb of Marinella Rufolo, witness of an eternal love.
In 1300, the Cathedral became the stage for a union that was to make history: the marriage between Antonio Coppola and Marinella Rufolo, heirs to the most powerful families of Scala and Ravello, who until then had vied for control of the territory.
At the edge of the ancient square, an 18th-century fountain enchants with its beauty. The purest water gushes from the Vrecciale spring in Santa Maria dei Monti, offering cool refreshment to passersby.
