Church of St. Mary of the Assumption

In this picture-postcard setting, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta is one of Positano's most beloved symbols. Built around the 9th century on the remains of an ancient Roman villa, the church elegantly overlooks the sea. Its façade of fine Trani marble houses three entrance portals, with a rose window of polychrome glass that diffuses the light in an enchanting play of colors. But the true essence of this church goes beyond its architectural majesty.

The Black Madonna, piously guarded in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, is the spiritual heart of Positano. According to legend, the Byzantine icon arrived here thanks to some Benedictine monks, but was stolen by a raid of Saracen pirates and taken aboard a sailing ship. The myth says that during the night, the divine intervention of the Madonna forced the men to return it, bringing it right back here, where the Church of Santa Maria Assunta stands today. The wooden statue of the Saint illuminates with its grace the Chapel of the Stars, a precious corner of the right nave.

The solemn side chapels hide authentic artistic treasures, including 18th century shepherds, masterpieces of the Neapolitan tradition. The sacred building also houses an imposing mechanical organ that towers over the choir, further enriching its extraordinary heritage. Leaving the church, one's gaze rests on the bell tower, built in 1707 by a Capuchin friar, whose memory is still commemorated by a plaque.
