Montepertuso and its legend
Positano, famous for its enchanting coastline and golden beaches, is also a place full of myths and legends that add to its charm. Among its hidden wonders is Montepertuso, a village that reveals a history steeped in tradition. Rising five hundred meters above sea level, Montepertuso is immersed in nature and offers a spectacular view of the Amalfi Coast. But in addition to its enchanting landscape, this corner of Positano is known for an evocative legend linked to the “Pertuso”, the natural hole in the rock.
According to tradition, centuries ago the devil tried to make a hole in the mountain with his hands, but failed. The Madonna, pitying his failure, touched the mountain with her hand, causing it to crumble and the devil to fall in. Even today, the silhouette of the devil is said to be visible in the rocks. During the night, the villagers were awakened by a violent storm and saw the Blessed Mother shrouded in white light, who reassured them. With a calm voice, she announced that the devil had been defeated and that evil had been destroyed, and she invited the people to follow her to the hill of the Sacred Forest.
Today, the memory of this legend lives on in the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, located at the top of the hill. Every year, on July 2nd, the village celebrates the patron saint of Montepertuso, Our Lady of Graces, with festivities that light up the village. The celebration includes a religious service and a fireworks and light show inside the hole in the mountain, evoking the legendary battle between good and evil.
