The Roman Villa
A little further on, far from the noise of modern life, a portal takes us back in time. Imagine yourself in 79 A.D., when the fury of Vesuvius swept over Pompeii and Herculaneum. The Villa Romana Marittima rises like a precious relic, revealing its buried history beneath today's surface. Conceived as a summer residence, its terraces overlooking the sea made it an ideal refuge for pleasure and ozium.
In the Triclinium, the frescoes of the fourth Pompeian style, with their vivid and intact colors, tell of the refinement of life in ancient Rome. Today, the Roman villa of Positano is one of the most extraordinary archaeological discoveries in southern Italy. During the eruption of Vesuvius, the villa was swept away by an alluvial avalanche: ash and volcanic debris, dispersed for kilometers in the air, covered the slopes of the Lattari Mountains and, carried by the rains towards the sea, buried the roofs of the dwellings under a layer of almost 10 meters.
This extraordinary archaeological site invites us to immerse ourselves in the wonders of a bygone era, where the timeless fascination of history intertwines with the pulsating energy of the present, creating a fascinating dialogue between what was and what is. In this meeting of past and present, the past is never really far away.
To complete the visit, the Upper and Medieval Crypts offer another glimpse into the past, enriching the Roman Archaeological Museum with a fascinating journey through time.
