Positano Fashion
Walking through the picturesque streets of Positano, between one staircase and another, the village reveals its most authentic soul. Artisan boutiques and hand-painted ceramic shops invite the visitor to discover an art rooted in the past. In the 1960s, Positano became an elite summer destination, attracting painters, writers, musicians and icons of the international jet set. With the arrival of tourists came the need for practical, light clothing better suited to the Mediterranean climate.
At that time, the village was still mainly inhabited by fishermen, and the local seamstresses began to work with what was available to them to meet this new demand: sheets, handkerchiefs, and other everyday fabrics. With extraordinary creativity, they transformed these simple materials into costumes, shorts, and tunics, creating a fashion that was refined over the years.
An unmistakable style was born that, year after year, with the growth of tourism, attracted the interest of an ever wider public. The local “pezzari”, inspired by the beauty of the place and the influx of eccentric and wealthy visitors, began to reinvent fashion with an innovative twist. Crocheted bikinis, lace skirts, and fisherman pants became symbols of a style that celebrated lightness and freedom. Icons of elegance like Brigitte Bardot and Jackie Onassis were fascinated, and soon the sophisticated handmade leather sandals became a must-have.
Today, the Positano style continues to evolve with the search for fine fabrics such as San Gallo linen and macramé lace, creating exclusive garments that remain a beacon of elegance and innovation in Italian fashion.
